12 Step Self-Esteem Recovery Program

Last week marked the Game Marketing Conference, where all the gurus of branding, selling, marketing and public relations gathered in a bunker (well not really) to discuss the hows and whys of the gaming industry. One of the most interesting sessions was given by John Geoghegan, who last I heard, was the VP of Marketing and Sales for the venerable LucasArts studio.
He outlined a series of points addressing what he sees as shortcomings in the industry with regards to how it is represented in the media, and what steps could be taken to correct the problems. Among his suggestions:
Promote the ratings system. We’ve got a good system by the ESRB, make sure people know about it. It worked for movies, the recording industry and TV. It can work for us. Parents don’t know about it. Do more quantitative research with leading universities to prove the positive impact of videogaming (and quantify any negatives). We need to share both the good and bad news. We could dispense with most negative mythology; see if there are negative attributes, what are they and how serious are they. Benchmark against sex and violence in prime network TV and movies. I don’t think videogames have cornered the market on sex and violence.
For a complete listing of the steps, Next Gen has been kind enough to post them in their entirety.
Of note is the fact that Geoghegan also managed to work a slide show of David Hasslehoff into his presentation when discussing network television. Ingrid must be tickled pink. We all know how much she loves the Hoff.

Be proud. Don’t be ashamed to say you like videogames. Just be sure to tell people why you like videogames.
I like this one man.
