2007 Best or Worst Year In Recent History?
We all get a little caught up in the media hype surrounding the plentiful release of blockbuster titles (Halo 3, Bioshock, blah blah). 2007 has been touted as the greatest year in gaming history, as the pinnacle of gaming achievement…so imagine my surprise when I read a Next-Gen piece that dug around to discover that 2007 had the second worst average review score in the 2000’s. Only 2006 posted a worse record, making me wonder what on earth is going on with the industry at the moment.
Do the games actually suck more these days? I highly doubt it. There are real stinkers every year, and glowing examples of what development should produce. I honestly think that the overall quality hasn’t changed much in the past half decade. The area of radical shift has actually been in the media. Game bashing and more hardball approach to constructive criticism have lead to a lower peak in average scores. Under the righteous cloak of honesty, writers have been pecking the eyes out of any title that could even potentially have a flaw. Scores are lower, temperatures are running high, and writers are (not) being fired over their reviews.
Looking at the dip in average from that perspective, the charged air of openness and freesom of opinion is merely asserting itself against the traditional constraints of an industry highly dependent on the goodwill of the very folks the media are supposed to be appraising.
Agree or disagree?
The Next-Gen article goes on to mention positives about 2007 such as: the 50% increase in game and hardware sales, and the progression of online integration.
