80’s Rockers Grab Chunk of Digital Immortality

by Erin on August 11th, 2006

But we won’t cry for yesterday
There’s an virrr-tu-allll world
Somehow we have to find
And as we try to make our way
To the virrrr-tu-aallllll world
We will learn to survive

Frightening mad props to anyone who recognizes my mutilated version of that song.

It looks like Linden Lab’s infinitely interactive MMO Second Life is not only providing us everyday entrepreneurs and wishful thinkers with a second chance at fame and fortune. Brit rockers Duran Duran, who had their heyday in 80’s and early 90’s, has got a glimpse of the potential propaganda maching that is Second Life, and is prepared to dive right in and create a “fully functional, futuristic utopia.”

The group plans on creating an entire island for fans and curiosity seekers to catch virtual performances of the band’s greatest hits. Creation has already begun, and you may find your avatar with front row seats to a Duran Duran concert before fall. I have to wonder though, if their avatars will be representative of their current appearance, or whether they’ll be magically transported back to 1983 and wild hair and make-up. I really do hope for the latter. Have you seen them lately? They look almost normal.

Just wait until Rod Stewart gets wind of this….
