African Mythology MMO in the Works

by Ingrid on February 7th, 2006

Something interesting this way comes, according to MTV news: a massively multiplayer online role playing game based on ancient African mythology. The game hopes to teach players about the beauty and history of Africa, while entertaining them with something other than sexy Night Elf dances (though if the developers have any sense, they’ll have the elephants dance the Macarena).

The game, titled Africa (saw that coming, did ya?), rests partly in the hands of a 19-year old programmer by the name of Adam Ghetti, who says, “The white American board developers of the large MMO development companies out there right now don’t honestly have the right background and knowledge on the continent of Africa and its lore, mythology and rich history, and quite honestly neither did I. They just don’t teach it over here.”

So, this game, slated for December 2006 aims to change the landscape of MMOs. Africa’s developers have a dream (or two): that one day the people of Africa will be able to play their own continent in cybercafes, that the game will join others of its genre and act as “a tool for world peace.”

“The average cycle on MMOs is two to four years,” [Ghetti] said. “We can turn out the same content, better graphics, better gameplay in eight months to a year.” He said games from his company, including “Africa,” will have graphics that surpass the current industry gold standard of the Unreal Engine 3. When he talks about the ability for every computer-controlled character in “Africa” to react uniquely to each human-controlled character, he scoffs at prospective doubters. “They say it’s impossible. Maybe if we were doing it in the archaic way everyone else tries to do it.”

Nothing wrong with being ambitious.

Hopefully all the hype they’re hypin’ won’t turn Africa into a huge disappointment when it finally comes out (December 2006? We’ll see).

Does it include the ability to start a 419 scam?

They’ll send you a poorly worded and misspelled e-mail about that saying how their uncle’s brother’s cousin recently died and how they need your computer to host this new add-on pack, but first they’ll need your IP address and your game account information. Then they’ll promise to send you the game along with 20% of all the code.
