All the EA Sports 06 You Can Stomach

by Erin on October 14th, 2005

EA Sports

It had to be done. Day after day it was NHL 06 this, or NBA 06 that. Every time I opened my feed reader to see what was new and exciting I was slammed by a bunch of new sporty updates. They’re everywhere, all consuming, and now available to you in this easy to navigate little post.

Each game title will be followed by a tremendously brief description, a link to screenshots and trailers over at IGN.com, a link to the review rating courtesy of MetaCritic, and three cool new features EA says it has incorporated. Note that these are the EA products for the professional leagues and that in order to give you the best impression possible I linked to the XBox 360 images and videos wherever possible. Unfortunately the 360 games are not available as Metacritic stats, so I used the average of the XBox and PS2 ratings.

First up, we have Madden NFL ‘06. The unexpected music on the site (I had the window minimized when it loaded) scared the bejeebus out of me. According to the website, Madden NFL has been around for 16 years and this year’s offering is touted as top of the heap. Check out the XBox 360 images and videos here. The metascore? 87 out of 100: generally favourable reviews.

Nifty Features:

  • New QB Vision Control: Use the right analog stick to find open receivers heading for paydirt.
  • NFL Superstar Mode: Create a Superstar and guide his life on and off the field. Choose an agent, earn one of 60 personas, and live the superstar life.
  • Enhanced Broadcast Presentation: Authentic new camera angles, improved graphics, and new commentary and cutscenes that provide the look and feel of a real NFL broadcast.

  • The basketball offering in the 06 series is NBA Live 06. Again with the music. EA promises that the sport of basketball is “elevated to a whole new level” with NBA Live 06. Check out the XBox 360 images and videos here. The metascore? 80.5 out of 100: generally favourable reviews.

    Nifty Features:

  • All-New EA SPORTS™ Freestyle Superstars -NBA Superstars perform with the distinct characteristics of a Highflyer, Playmaker, Scorer, Sharpshooter, Stopper, or Power Player.
  • All-New Graphics Engine -Showcasing their talents like never before, players perform, act, and truly look like their real-life counterparts.
  • Reign Supreme in Dynasty Mode™ - Evolve your rookie into a Superstar, or take the helm of a Franchise by assembling assistants, trainers, and scouts to assist in player development.

  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06. The EA site links to a blank page. If they can’t give me a functioning site to work with, no way I’ll give them a nice little description. Check out the XBox 360 images and videos here. The metascore? 82 out of 100: generally favourable reviews. But taaaaake a look at the player reviews on the link, the game got slammed at a 3.7 of 10 because it was felt to be only a mild improvement (hence basically the same game) as the last PGA Tour. Seems like I’m not the only one who thinks EA is making millions on shoddy repackaging.

    Nifty Features:

  • New physics engine.
  • Trajectory and spin control.

  • For hockey fans there’s NHL 06. “Prepare yourself of a new era of hockey”, says EA Sports. Indeed. My quick review of the demo can be found here. Check out the XBox 360 images and videos here. The metascore? 78.5 out of 100: generally favourable reviews.

    Nifty Features:

  • All-New EA SPORTS™ Skill Stick: Create highlight reel goals by executing the signature moves of an NHL All-Star. With a tap of the right analog stick, drop the puck between your skates, fake out goaltenders with a between-the-legs shot, or puck the puck in the back of the net with a bat-in.
  • EA SPORTS R.P.M. Physics: New Realistic Puck Momentum (R.P.M.) means the puck is dangerous—hard shots can injure defensemen, shake up goalies in the crease, ripple the twine, or knock water bottles off the net to add insult to injury.
  • Creation Zone: Create a player who looks like you and get into the game with the new analog facial sculpting controls. Add black eyes, broken noses and scars to put fear in the eyes of your opponents. Create an NHL team in your hometown and build a dynasty, or edit any player in the league with an all-new player editor.

  • EA serves up some serious NASCAR action with NASCAR 06. Total team control. Check out the XBox 360 images and videos here. The metascore? 80.5 out of 100: generally favourable reviews.

    Nifty Features:

  • All-New Voice Commands - As the first console racing game to use voice-recognition technology, you have the edge. Call out to teammates for help, talk to your crew chief for real-time info on track conditions, as well as activate in-game menu options.
  • Driver Attributes - Every driver has his own personality and performance characteristics matching their real-life counterparts.
  • Create the Top Racing Team - Create your character and work your way up the NASCAR ranks, building-up the ultimate team. Take the helm of your own racing organization and position yourself to out-perform real-world NASCAR teams, or even own them.

  • Have a hankering for a little footie? Have a peek at FIFA Soccer 06. “As much football as you want, whenever you want it”. Check out the XBox 360 images and videos here. The metascore? 81 out of 100: generally favourable reviews.

    Nifty Features:

  • Trajectory and velocity control for free kicks.
  • A 15-year career mode that lets you budget, scout and manage.
  • A total of 12 new stadiums to play in for that authentic experience

  • I hope that puts all the information you need for your EA Sports fill right at your fingertips. With the prevalence of these titles on the 360 launch list, be sure to give them a good look over and pick them up with your system if you like what you see.
