Atari Launches GamersFIRST
Now here’s a novel idea: A game developer has decided that their products should be affordable to consumers. Seems stupidly obvious really, but when you consider that triple-A games currently cost upwards of half of my monthly grocery budget to purchase, it has become clear that cost of living vs. cost of gaming conflicts are ever more difficult to avoid.
Atari, one of the oldest and most well recognized gaming brands, has unleashed GamersFIRST, their new consumer pricing program that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The deal according to Shacknews is that starting June 1st, participating retailers will:
include a new price point of $19.99 on all existing console titles for PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, Xbox video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, Nintendo GameCube(TM), and Game Boy(R) Advance as well as all existing Windows titles (excluding [DDO]). Additionally, all Windows titles included in the program will be available for immediate download at Valve and Direct2Drive, also for $19.99.
Even if you’re not a fan of Atari games, what this does do is set up the possibility of a precedent, and market competition. If Atari begins to undersell their games at rock bottom prices, who’s to say that other company’s, alarmed at missing out on a piece of the pie, won’t launch similar ventures themselves. I’m not saying that EA will all of a sudden make their franchise games available for $19.99, but they may, depending on how much of a dent GamersFIRST makes, be tempted to begin lowering prices on some of their bottom tier titles. Even better? Atari is also making use of digital distribution with this program, making it quick, easy, and now even cheap to get great games.
