Australian Retailers Lose Interest in the Xbox 360

Channel News and SmartHouse surveyed ten retail chains that operate over 2,000 stores in Australia and the results show that Australian retailers are shifting their support focus from the Xbox 360 to the PS3 and Wii. The survey reveals that in Australia, the PlayStation 3 is doing well sales wise due to its Blu-ray feature and the Wii sells well among women and children, leaving the Xbox 360 floating aimlessly in the wind.
Other problems affecting the Xbox 360 are its numerous hardware problems, which have turned people off from the console and on to other options.
A retailer in Melbourne says, “The Xbox 360 is dead. We were stocking it because of our relationship with Microsoft however all our energy and marketing is going into the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii unless Microsoft comes up with something new or additional marketing dollars.”
Retailers have said that Microsoft’s attempts at discounts and offers haven’t worked at all and some are “thinking of dumping the console all together.”
It all seems a bit dramatic to me. I can’t imagine that they’d really dump the Xbox 360, but it does point to the fact that Sony has managed to pull the PS3 up from the depths of despair. Will Microsoft manage to do the same?
