Auto Assault MMORPG

Today I came across the news (potentially old to most) that NCSoft has a new MMORPG in the works called Auto Assault. The game, developed by NetDevil, is slated for 2006, and will feature some fast action, digital road rage. I guess they’re looking to push MMORPGs in a new direction, and I can’t say that’s a bad idea. I’m always up for some novel interactions in the games arena, and it’s about time someone did something different with MMOs.
Here’s how IGN describes it:
Hop in your own customized cars, semis, and motorcycles and prepare to fight the mutated creatures and bandits of Auto Assault’s post-apocalyptic world. Battle other players both in arenas and in epic race vs. race wars for control of the regions in a devastated Earth. Auto Assault uses the power of the Havok physics engine to let you make insane jumps, send obstacles flying and even blast bridges, buildings, fences and trees with your car-mounted rockets. Anything you can hit, you can destroy!
I admit, I’m easily drawn to anything MMORPG, and this is looking like something worth checking out. Racing cars and blowing stuff up. Tres cool. And the graphics are looking pretty nice, too.
I’m hoping this is the start of new MMORPG-geared ideas surfacing. Anyone have any good ones?
I once thought it would be cool to have a Heaven vs. Hell type MMORPG. I think the controversy surrounding it might make the gaming world implode though. Or maybe no one would care. In the end it’s not really much different that CoH vs. CoV when you break it down. What do you think?

I…I’m gonna go cry now… They just had to ruin MMORPGs with those damn car games didn’t they? *sobs*

I’m in the beta for that. Dunno how much my NDA allows me to say, but I wasn’t horribly impressed with the game when I tried it out. I’m sure they’ve changed and patched things since I played but, eh.

I’m also in the beta, and you’re keeping the right side of the NDA Matt! However I’ve gotta disagree, there’s been a recent patch and the game is looking truly awesome now.

Hey Jez, thanks for stopping by! I’m a fan of the PMS clan :)
Tor: There’s no crying in gaming! ;)
Matt: How long ago did you beta test it? For someone who doesn’t like MMORPGs you’re sure involved in a lot of them ;)

I know. I beta’d for *maybe* a week at most. There were scheduled testing play times and I already was finding the game a bit lackluster, so I quickly lost interest.
As for actually playing the mmorpgs, you can blame my roommate. He’s all into them and is always like “try this one!” “try that one!” and so I usually give in and try it out. My problem is that I need a game fix inbetween my FPS bouts. See, when I sit down to play a game, I sit down not to *play* it, but to beat it. So I’m usually done with a game within a day or two, and it’s generally a long release time between any good FPS games. MMORPGs tend to be a good mindless level grind as I wait for my next FPS fix.
