Average Game Prices Fall On PSP & DS
Curmudgeon Gamer has taken an interesting look at the forerunners of the handheld platform market, the PSP and the DS, with regards to game prices and the effect of the PSP price cut on this segment of the gaming industry.
Comparing the Sony PSP to the Nintendo DS, it was found that PSP prices are still higher than those for the DS, but that the average game prices have fallen for both systems over the last five months (-$2.16 for the PSP, -$1.68 for the DS). The median game price for both handhelds sits squarely at $29.99.

The stats cast doubt on two of the long-standing anti-PSP rants:
- There ain’t no games for the PSP. EB Games was found to have 94 new games listed for the PSP, a close second to the 102 games on the DS.
- PSP games cost a fortune. Hogswaggle! In fact, it appears that publishers have given up on the $49.99 PSP titles altogether. Plus, a full 33% of PSP games go for under $25, less than the 41% on the DS, but still respectable. It should be noted that 33% of PSP games hit the $39.99 mark however, while only 23% of DS games cross the $30 line.
For those of you with an unnatural love for spreadsheets (my kin, I salute you!), the data has been made available at Curmudgeon Gamer in both OpenOffice and plaintext CSV format if you’d like to manipulate the numbers yourself. Let’s see who can come up with the coolest data trend.
