Blu-Ray Coming to an XBox Near You?

Well this certainly is a turn of events. Considering that Microsoft has been one of the more aggressive supporters of Toshiba’s HD-DVD format, it’s rather strange for Microsoft honcho Peter Moore to suddenly be talking about the inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive for movie feedback in later incarnations of the 360.
From 1Up:
Moore says the fact that Xbox 360 would use an external next-gen DVD drive allows them to adapt to whichever standard wins out in the end. And by the same logic, Moore says that the PlayStation 3’s built-in Blu-Ray drive could limit Sony’s possibilities when and/or if HD-DVD becomes the predominant standard.
Finally, Moore says Microsoft is firm on the decision that (possible) future iterations Xbox 360 will not ship with a built-in HD-DVD drive.
Why don’t they just put a fork in Toshiba, I think they’re done.

I’m not sure why Peter Moore thinks that Blu-Ray would hinder Sony. Sony is the master of forcing proprietary formats on their consumers. Just look at the PSP’s movie format and you’ll see what I’m talking about. For instance, the PSP only takes memory stick duo’s - nothing else! Not even the plain Memory Stick Pro.
Certainly choice is good in a consumer-friendly market. Having no choice would force a monopoloy on us. But what is really a drag is having an infinite number of devices, each with their own formats and not supporting anything else.
Anyway, people will buy the PS3 for the games, not because it supports Blu-Ray and not HD-DVD. But MS does have a point - if Sony wants to make the PS3 the entertainment hub of the future, then it better support more than just Blu-Ray. As a gaming system alone, a Blu-Ray only system is no big deal.

Is it my imagination or is he trying to karate chop the X-Box???
Is it so hard to ask all the manufacturers to play nice, get along with each other and allow the consume to choose the format of whatever they want.
I think Sony still has a chip on its shoulder from losing out in the VHS/Betamax debacle, and has vowed it will now push its view of the world according to Sony on everyone, come hell or high water.
