Blu-ray Outsells HD-DVD

Sony might’ve had a bad start with the Play Station 3, but it’s starting to look good for the console. Recent sales figures have shown that the Blu-ray format is outselling HD-DVD 70% to 30%. If Blu-ray does indeed win the format war, and sooner rather than later, it might mean a big boost for the PS3. Microsoft will end up having to scramble to make up the difference. Sure they have the upcoming Xbox 360 Elite, but you can already get all of that with Apple TV, if you’re so inclined.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) reports that Blu-ray movie sales increased more than sevenfold after the PS3’s launch, while Blu-ray “has accounted for approximately 70 percent of the high-definition market since the first week in January,” according to SPHE Worldwide prez David Bishop.
Already 100,000 copies of the Blu-ray edition of Casino Royale have shipped (this after nine months of having blu-ray as a viable format). Comparitively, it took eleven months before a DVD title managed to hit that number. A sign of things to come? Guess we’ll see.
