CSI vs. GTA

by Erin on November 25th, 2005

CSI Miami

You all know me so well! I received three separate tips for this story, and it’s one that I had been planning to giggle about on my own regardless. I’m a forensic chemist by training and watch CSI (only the original, I can’t stand NY or Miami, bleh) with a smirk and a smile.

Apparently there was an episode of CSI Miami on Monday that has got gamers all riled up because it featured the forensics team investigating the results of what happens when someone takes Grand Theft Auto (thinly veiled for legal purposes under the pretend name “Urban Hell Raiser”) and applies it to the real world. The nasty perpetrators award themselves points for crimes commited, robbed banks, all that fun stuff.

There’s been such a spate of these stories lately, about kids drowning while their dad is engrossed in a game, people committing suicide, the evils of MMORPGs…and now even television series are picking up on the hysteria and trying to turn a profit. You can have a peek at the episode guide (I’m a geek, I check all the CSI sites regularly, don’t hate!) over at CBS.com. The reaction has been more of derision than anything else in the online world, with Salon ripping the episode a new one, and darrenbarefoot.com finding fault in a show he normally actually likes.

This is all doing wonders for my image. The word ‘gamer’ is like saying ‘Star Wars’…use it in the wrong circle and you’re going to get pantsed.

(Thanks to Karine, Arieanna, and Michelle for the tip!)

Hehe, somehow this reminded me of a strip from CAD (online cartoon called CtrlAltDel for those who don’t know) where Lucas gets arrested for being a “threat to society” after he admitted to being a gamer :)
