D&D vs. MMORPG

by Erin on October 4th, 2005

D&D

Tired of being shown-up by their video brethren, whose reliance on visuals created by other people to buffer their (obvious!) lack of imagination and whose dependency on scantily clad night elves for evening entertainment is a disgrace to true RPGers everywhere, the Dungeons & Dragons legions have raised the bar in the battle for supremacy in RPG-land.

With more and more people taking up the MMORPG banner, many of whom would likely never have been involved in the role playing game scene before video games came along, D&D is likely hoping to capitalize on the trend and bolster the dice’n'dare sector. Their recent ad is bold attacks (seriously, when have you ever heard a D&Der legitimately call someone ‘less cool’?) on the growing number of gamers who think that spending night after night glued to their computer screen in the hopes of a little elven booty/bootie, is an acceptable past time.

“If you’re going to sit in your basement pretending to be an elf, you should at least have some friends over to help.”

The ad is pure gold, and gets funnier every time I read it. I’m a pixellated RPGer myself, but even I have to laugh at the jab when it’s so cleverly done. I’m hoping that an entire series of equally antagonistic ads will be released by the company, unleashing retaliatory attacks from Blizzard et al., until a full scale mud slinging match is waged for the title of “Coolest in Nerd Couture”. I’d buy a ticket for a ring-side seat to something like that.

Aah, yes… Unfortunate that things have come to this, that we DnDers have to climb up from our cellars, led by our fearless DM to battle the oncoming horde of “0mg t3h 1337″ (aka majority of PC game RPers, unfortunately)But I just want you guys to know, that I’ve got a lvl 24 cleric, whom you don’t want to mess with, and I know where you live… *cough* Anyway, Erin, the match is on every few fridays a month, I’ll give you a head up for the next extreme match of “Geek VS G33k!1!” *grins*

I hope Teddy-T, that you will come to find some PC RPers that aren’t intrinsically annoying. It may be difficult and somewhat dangerous, but I think with time and determination, you can succeed!

Keep me posted…it’s like celebrity death match for nerds. Awesome.

Changed my name, and darn you guys are fast at replying *blinks*. And as a matter of fact I have, on WoW I’ve got plenty of fellow people using stars and acting out their characters in “RL” *grins* so no worries there. Besides, the doom of my social life is apporaching, Lord of the Rings Online! *kneels in the dust*
