E3 Becomes E3 Media & Business Summit

by Ingrid on July 10th, 2007

Long gone are the days of booth babes and celebrity appearances at the infamous E3 game event. This year, E3 has matured and reinvented itself as the E3 Media & Business Summit. Starting tomorrow, the new E3 will be much more toned down. No more flashy exhibits. No more heart-pounding music.

“It’s about the quality of connection for leaders of the industry,” says Michael Gallagher, a former telecommunications policy adviser under the Bush administration. He now heads the Entertainment Software Association, the trade group that puts together the show.

With more than 60,000 people cramming into the Los Angeles Convention Center at last year’s expo, there was a feeling that the needs of no one — media, retailers or video game publishers — were being addressed particularly well.

Only about 30 of the largest video game software and hardware companies are attending this year in Santa Monica, Calif., down from hundreds in previous years. Also missing will be the army of bloggers, zealous game fans and others who somehow managed to infiltrate the trade-only event.

Let’s take a moment to mourn the good old days of E3.

All the same, I look forward to seeing what great info comes out of the event. Already some great trailers have leaked out of the sacred halls of E3-dom. Trailers for such games as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Dead or Alive: Deformed. Good stuff. I’ll be posting these shortly.
