E3 Expedition ‘06: Day One
I would post pictures but I, in my traditional disorganization, neglected to bring my camera uplink cable and thus y’all will have to wait until I get home. Needless to say though, once they manage to finish preparations (I think they’re a little behind schedule as half the stuff wasn’t even unpacked yet) I do think that it will be a truly impressive spectacle. For some reason the convention center is not as large as I thought it would be, which isn’t to say it isn’t enormous, but I think the emptiness of the pre-expo period gives it more of a museum feel. Once it’s swarming with crowds and competing audio/video, I’m sure it will seem larger than life.
Today I broke into the as-yet-unfinished-expo…well not really, I got to the door, saw the security guard step in my direction, squealed, and ran away. The show opens up in earnest tomorrow, though I do believe I’ll be slogging through sessions and meetings most of the day. I’ll have to patrol the booths Thursday and Friday instead. I managed to get my badge and my introductory goodie bag with little difficulty and spent the rest of my time prowling the corridors trying to get oriented.
The conference itself is really a bit of a questing role playing game. Pick your character class, be it exhibitor (public relations, development or booth babe), media (mainstream, gaming, television, online, or print) or event staff and navigate the week to secure your own specific goals. Can you find a publisher for your game? Get that big PR interview? Who will walk away with the best story? The most swag? The possibilities are endless…

The tote itself is pretty quality, I’m most excited by that. Also got a conference t-shirt, a pen, a disc with some really cool stuff on it (who can say free Vanguard beta?), and some promo material.
