E3 Expedition ‘06: Day Two

by Erin on May 10th, 2006

Metal Gear Solid 4: The Guns of the PatriotsThe Expo portion of E3 got underway today resulting in an exponential increase in the amount of people and amount of insanity. Everywhere you looked there were lights, or booths, or cameras, or…contrary to the edict, booth babes.

I could go into details about my thoughts on the conference at this point, or ramble on about the atmosphere (etc.) but it can be summed up in the simple phrase: ‘big and flashy’. And that’s about it. I did have the chance today to hear some great people talk during the sessions. Peter Molyneux told funny poor developer stories about living on tinned food and chain smoking, while injecting a lot of experienced opinion at the panel discussion of what makes a great game, while Hideo Kojima held court, joked around, and was his normal mischievious self during the sneak peek session.

Things Seen/Heard/Rumoured:

  • Gears of War in-game footage - I will be buying this game, it is absolutely fab. Shoot the crap out of things, dodge from cover to cover, and all with gorgeous graphics. What’s not to love?
  • The Wii Controller - I already thought the controller was cool, but after seeing it in action at the sneak peek session, I have decided that it’s uber-cool. I watched a demo dude sword fight, gun fight, and interact with the environment (hello turning your hand to open a door!) in ways that make for a totally immersive experience. I’m going to try to get my hands on it to try it myself at the demo booth, but there was a one hour wait pretty much as soon as the booth opened.
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 - the 15-minutes extended trailer that Kojima displayed was, in a word, impressive. I don’t care if the footage was pre-rendered, it was mind-boggling to think that it was part of a video game. Raiden is back, much to some people’s chagrin, but Kojima assured everyone that you would only be controlling Snake in MGS4. He also suggested that he may try to bring the MGS feel to other platforms including the Wii.
  • Vivox Integration into EvE - yep that’s right, now there’s an in-game chat interface so you don’t have to run clumbsy Team Speak or Ventrilo. I tried it out myself and chatted with some folks in Boston and it sounded clear as a bell. Great great technology in the opinion of someone who hates most of the existing voice chat software currently available.
  • Paris Hilton, Jenny McCarthy and Eva Longoria - all present at various times. I managed to see none of them. Likely because I was still dreaming about Wii swordfights.

Quote of the Day goes to Lionhead Studios’ Peter Molyneux, who described playing a game for the first time in the design process as being:

“unmitigated horror [that makes him] want to be cuddled by [his] mummy”
