EA’s Probst A Sugah Daddy

by Erin on April 26th, 2006

probst_larry.jpgNo one ever really questions that executives make a lot of money, it’s kind of a given that once your job title gets replaced by three letter codes that your bank account squeals with glee. I try really hard not to get jealous, or to cry, when the annual salary of a CEO could not only pay my rent, but could buy the entire building that I’m living in, but sometimes it’s difficult to keep perspective on things when we’re talking not six-figure salaries, but eight.

Forbes recently had a look at performance and pay for 500 of America’s top CEOs. What they found was that these 500 individuals were paid a collective $5.4 billion in 2005, snagged a 6% pay increase, which sounds enormous unless you consider that the pay increase in 2006 was 54% (OMG the poor CEOs must be starving!).

Among those CEOs was good old Larry Probst, head man over at Electronic Arts. Forbes found that he, the lone representative from the gaming industry, pulled in:

$12.59 million in total compensation (including non-salary items such as stock) during 2005, and over the past five years has pocketed a healthy $81.76 million.…[putting] Probst, who has been with EA for 22 years, and has served as the CEO of the last 15 years, as the #114 highest paid executive on the list of 500.

Before everyone falls over dead at the number of zeros involved, it turns out that his compensation is not without reason. Probst scored very well on Forbes’ performance measures, and EA shareholders seem to be a happy, healthy, wealthy bunch. As long as the revenue comes in, a decent chunk is bound to be funneled in Probst’s direction; he is, after all, playing a large role in keeping the venture afloat (along with all those developers working 80 hour weeks in the EA sweatshops).

Come to think of it, I’m a game industry exec! I want Probst-esque compensation! In fact I’ve emailed my boss demanding it as we speak (see you on the bread lines tomorrow folks).
