Estrogen Take-Over: An All-Girls Game League

by Ingrid on February 8th, 2006

Every Tuesday an all-girls gaming league meets at GamerzNet in Orange County, where estrogen reigns supreme over the badies onscreen.

The league, which is headed by gaming mom, Kathryn Grodin, consists of a dozen or so girls teaming up to tackle the virtual bad guys, and compete in tournaments for free game time at GamerzNet.

Video gaming has become more appealing to girls and women. So when Kathryn and Todd Grodin opened GamerzNet at its new location in January, they decided to diversify their clientele.

They established an all-girls league, which also participates in tournaments with boys.

Kathryn Grodin said the league is a chance for girls to form clans and compete against each other. The prize? Some free play time at GamerzNet.

But when the girls play, it’s just as cutthroat.

Their youngest member is a 5-year old named Sarah, and I’m quite certain she kicks ass.

This is the sort of thing that makes me happy. I mean, I was part of a Nintendo club when I was little, but there were only two of us in it, so I’m not sure how much of a “club” it really was. We did, however, have super cool (self-made) shirts with Nintendo patches attached and competed against each other every day. Those were good times.

…and what happens on a girls’ night out stays on a girls’ night out.

But Tor, if you just “happen to be wandering past” when they come out…

    Okay, all joking aside.

Is it that bad out there that women don’t want to join mainly male dominated clans?

Or can this be seen as a starting point - join an all female clan where there isn’t perceived to be that intimidation factor, and once you are comfortable with the whole thing, go off and join whatever clan, if you want to.

Don’t you think that other male groups will choose to (virtually) beat up on this all female group. Won’t it be seen as a challenge by some to try and get rid of the female group so they can have the arena to themselves (males).

Okay I’m starting to ramble, but I hope you see what I mean, and can enlighten me. Thank you.

Oh, and can we please get a spell checker in here!

First rule of the All-Girls League: You do not talk about the All Girls’ League.

Cal, I don’t know that it’s ‘that bad’ out there necessarily. I suppose it would really depend on the clan and the guys in it. Some guys are awesome. Some guys are jerks. I think some girls probably think, “Oh cool. Just girls. We can play. No one gets hit on. I don’t have to dress to impress. I can just relax and play games.” It really depends on the girls, too.

Personally, I’d probably join both clans. I’d love to hang out with my girl friends and play games, but I’d also like to see what the guys are up to and liven up the competition.

Dunno about the whole arena-domination mentality. I guess, again, it would depend on the people in the ‘clans’ and the spirit of the competitions.

    PS: No spellchecker for you!

It really depends but sometimes there are couples who met in clan wars and love sparks just fly…

    Not me though.

“Their youngest member is a 5-year old named Sarah”

They should come up with video game speed dating. Team up for a game for 10 minutes and then switch partners. No awkward conversation required.

    Love at first kill.

I don’t get it.. it’s not a romantic pick up thing, it’s for fun isn’t it?

Guys hitting on me in a game, is likely to make me want to go elsewhere quite frankly.
