Evolution of Game Music

Patrick Dell, a music education major at Missouri University got a $3,000 grant to study the evolution of video game music. Starting with the first “beeps” to the more sophisticated soundtracks of today, Dell studied the various ways in which video game music has evolved over time and the ways in which it has seeped into our culture.
This is a perfectly-timed study, considering how many musicians are jumping into the video game arena (50 Cent, SlipKnot - to name but a couple). Music has certainly become an essential part of the gaming experience.
Dell has been using his research in the classroom, and has been surprised to find how well his students take to the familiarity of the music. Beyond that, Dell has other ideas in the horizon:
Dell’s project will soon broaden its audience. He will host a performance March 10 in the MU Fine Arts Building. Musicians will perform music from video games, and he will discuss each piece between performances. Leo Saguiguit, MU’s saxophone professor, will perform music from “Super Mario Brothers,” and Add 9, MU’s men’s a cappella group, will perform the “Halo” theme.
Hey, that’s on my birthday. Too bad I’m nowhere near MU, because it does sound like a great performance. Maybe they’ll release an album.

I’ll pass on the concert, but the study sounds interesting. I wonder if studies like that are made public ?
