France To Give Tax Credits to Video Game Companies
In an effort to encourage video game development in France, the government will be offering tax credits to local video game development companies.
Parliament has approved a measure that will offer tax credits to producers of video games “with a cultural dimension” to finance 20 percent of a company’s production costs to a maximum of 3 million euros ($3.91 million) a year, the ministry said in a statement.
It said the move, intended to keep video game production in France, had been decided in recognition of the growing cultural importance of video games, which it said were played regularly by 15 million people in France.
Heh, go France. Now why can’t the US be this cool?
Hopefully this will help finance some creative new video games. Vivendi (the corporate suits behind Blizzard Ent.) are probably having a party as we speak. How rude of them not to invite me, since we’re neighbors….
Anyway, we’ll see what comes of this. The specifics of the offer are still being worked out behind closed doors, and should be finalized sometime in February. I mean, Février.
