Game Flop Gouges NCSoft

by Erin on February 8th, 2007

NCSoft had a bit of a pill to swallow when it announced its 2006 revenue totals. Profits for the Korean MMO maker nosedived 43% from the previous year, a slump that the company attributes to “increased investment in development to expand the company’s game portfolio” (ie. spending more on the actual creation of the games and the people who make them come to life), and the dismal failure of one of NCSoft’s major 2006 releases.

Auto Assault, a post-apocalyptic car-fight MMORPG fell on its face despite anticipation amongst MMORPG players and a fancy pants launch back in April of last year. Play-Girlz’ very own Ingrid expressed curiousity about it and met with mixed comments from folks involved in the beta.

I doubt it will slow them down very much, what with them churning out a new ‘episode’ of Guild Wars every six months ad infinitum. Not to mention their other upcoming ventures, which have been garnering a lot of attention in the gaming media and at conferences. Increased investment in development should start paying off this year, with a whole whack of NCSoft games ready to roll. Tabula Rasa, Aion: The Tower of Eternity and several other projects are slated to be launched this year. The future of 2007 looks bright for NCSoft, and the blip of forgettability that was Auto Assault will fade into the background. Everyone makes mistakes right?
