GameStop’s Big Brother Fantasy

by Erin on February 27th, 2007

The exchange of personal information in the wide, wide world of retail is a bit of a touchy subject. How much do you give to whom, at what cost, and how will they use it? Will they sell your email to spammers? Will they track your buying habits for their own analysts to frown over?

GameStop, that beloved vendor of gaming goodness, is up to something according to a recent post on The Consumerist. Apparently, once you’re on a list with GameStop, you’re on all lists whether you like it or not. If you’ve reserved a game with the retail giant, you’re not only on the call list for when those coveted items come in, but also on their solicitation list for a nifty little racket the company has going. According to a prior The Consumerist

“GameStop cross-references their database of customers who’ve reserved games with a database of all the games that customer has purchased. Then, GameStop solicits these customers in an attempt to buy back the games at half price so it can resell them”

One reader decided that he didn’t want to be on that solicitation list anymore and contacted his local outlet to ask to be removed. He was bluntly told that if he was removed from that particular list, that he would also be removed from the reservation calling list, and thus would not receive notification when his reserved games arrived.

Bit of a bully really. Thought you might like to know that the next time you’re asked if you’d like a GameStop reminder call, that you’re getting a lot more than you bargained for.
