Gaming Addiction Diagnoses Exaggerated?
It seems appropriate to post this after the market report that sees MMORPGs continuing to grow well into the next decade. University of Bolton researcher Dr John Charlton, Research Fellow in Psychology in the School of Health, Psychology and Sport, is working to refine the criteria defining computer game addiction.
Charlton feels that the current criteria applied to the study of gaming addiction are not appropriate as classification paradigms because they often use the same framework as research studying gambling addiction. High use is often misidentified as addictive behaviours, leading to the possibility that some studies’ findings may exaggerate the prevalence of addiction by 10%.
Don’t rejoice too soon however; although addiction numbers may be inflated by as much as 10%, those that are addicted were found to experience problems with work, home, and social lives. Charlton’s study noted the following trends in the addicted gamer group:
-
more than 40% said their social life was suffering
-
30% recognised gaming was interfering with their work
-
40% said it was causing arguments at home
-
50% confessed they were not getting enough sleep
-
35% said they missed meals to carry on playing.
