Gaming Innovations Impress Popular Science

by Erin on November 11th, 2005

XBox 360

The Grand Award in the home entertainment category of Popular Science magazine’s Best of What’s New in 2005 went to Microsoft’s XBox 360. Big praise for a machine that isn’t even on the market yet. Although the general shopping public hasn’t had the opportunity to test and try it for themselves, the media seems to be quite taken with the little white box.

Popular Science states that the 360 is poised to “take over the living room”, rather than just acting as a simple gaming console. They go so far as to refer to it as the most powerful computer we’ve ever seen, providing a realistic gaming experience through the incorporation of high definition television.

Go XBox! (I’d like to point out that Popular Science is heavily sponsored by Microsoft -cough-)

Not to be outdone, Sony digs it’s hook into the Gadget category and runs off with the Grand Award thanks to its ubiquitous little devil, the PSP. Citing the multimedia capabilities, including the first wide screen portable gaming device, the creation of universal media disks (UMDs) for data storage, and the compact size as reasons why this pint-sized juggernaut deserved the nod. I’m a little surprised by the PSP’s victory over the more robustly supported Nintendo DS, but hey, it’s their opinion, not mine.
