Gaming’s Wacko Jacko Still Kicking

Just when you thought he couldn’t make a bigger fool out of himself, Jack Thompson headed into the new year with a declaration sure to outdo professional conspiracy theorists the world over. Late in December, the anti-games crusader released a press release that stated, in no uncertain terms, that he had uncovered a secret link between the gaming industry an the US Department of Defense, citing the spate of school shootings.

His goal? To make people aware of this collusion and to expose the dastardly plan to the media in order to spread the word. Because, you know, the media aren’t already all over the violence and gaming angle like blowflies on a dead horse.

My major source of irritation with Thompson is his innate ability to focus like a pit bull on tiny issues and use vaguely related sources of information to build what he feels is a compelling (I would call it just as misleading as DoD materials) case for the evils of the gaming industry and the danger to youth everywhere. Take one of the sources that Thompson directed Game | Life to when he was contacted for comment: click here to visit. It does point out the fact that some military training programs have been loosely based off of existing video games, but on the other hand, it questions the applicability of commercial games for virtual maneuvers and simulation because of their lack of complexity and realism. Training “games” may be based on existing structures (what isn’t, in all honesty), but I say think of them as heavily modded, open source platforms. Not exactly something you can run out and buy at EB Games.

Although I do criticize the use of America’s Army as a misleading recruitment tool I think it’s entirely another thing to lay down a conspiracy that the DoD and gaming industry are purposefully breeding generations of kids who think war is cool.
