Get Your Duel On

by Erin on January 5th, 2008

Duels2.jpgNow I heard about Duels.com back in the day and kind of shrugged it off dismissively like a gimmick just waiting for a swift and silent death, but here’s one site that come back to slap me in the face and build an enormous community of frenzied fans.

The game is as simple as the game really. Think of it as PvP World of Warcraft without the lag, server crashes, and necessity for 50 person meet-ups for epic quests. Simply create your duelist and battle other players for hawt loot, victorious glory, and a higher ranking in the ladder system employed by the site. Players can also dish out some real coin if they want to up the ante on their avatars skills.

Niche and gimmick? Only if you count rapid growth since it’s summer launch and an impressive tens of thousands of duels per day going down on the site. How do they manage the high number of challenges? By being asynchronous silly! It may seem like a bit of a throwback to olden times where turn-based email games, largely in the strategy realm, were more common, but what this functionality allows Duels.com to accomplish is to be accessible and non-restrictive for those with an outside life. Your opponents don’t have to be online for you to kick their butt, you just mutually agree to duel and the game works out who wins based on who’s cooler. There’s even a Duels.com Facebook application to help you along your path to invincibility.

Did I mention it’s also free? Yeah, I thought you’d like that.
