Get Your Smack On
One of the reasons I’ve stopped playing first person shooter games in any sort of organized way — I used to be heavy into the clan structure, including a stint as the General of the Army in a Medal of Honor clan — was that I couldn’t stand people. It had nothing to do with gameplay or outdated graphics…the fact of the matter was that I still loved the game, but spent most of my time ripping my hair out in annoyance at all of my fellow players who seemed to either cheat, mouth off at random, unwarranted intervals, or in worst case scenarios, do both simultaneously. I was a clean player, since most of my enjoyment comes out of knowing it was my own skill that did the damage, and not my effective but dishonest wall hack.
Sometimes I long to get back into the swing of things in the FPS world, but there’s always something that happens that reminds me (usually with a brisk slap to the face) of why I’m no longer involved. Take the charming company GameDR, who have now made it even easier for pimply brats to get on my nerves and eradicate any enjoyment I may have been able to eke out of my experience. They’ve created (and they’re proud of it) SmackTalk, an Xbox 360 peripheral that attaches between your mic and your controller and allows you to pre-record 5 maddeningly stupid messages for easy access and repeatability. Now you can not only annoy your fellow players, but you can do it faster than ever, and with almost no effort on your worthless, lazy part.
Their catchy motto? “Audio Graffiti for Xbox Live!”.
You know, I think I can actually feel Matt over at FPS Rantings cringing…

Hahah..yeah…ugh. Stuff like this and the other reasons you mentioned are a big part of why I stopped playing shooters online. I’ll partake in office games with my co-workers but online play has just lost it’s appeal for me. I’ll do the singleplayer thing. Bump the difficulty up a few notches so as to help keep some of my “edge” and just enjoy the game that way. Dealing with people who just can’t seem to enjoy the game for what it is, ruins my fun and I’m not paying $50 for that “mod”.
