Girl Gamer Awards Nominees & the Fight for Equality
The list of games nominated for the Girl Gamer Awards (a title that seems somewhat misleading as the awards are for games presumably chosen by girl gamers, rather than awards given to girl gamers) is somewhat embarrassing.
For example, someone tell me why there’s a category called RPG/Action/Adventure … you can’t divvy it up a bit there? There’s plenty to choose from in each category, and still there’s only 3 titles. Three? How about Sam & Max? Or Scratches?
Also, since when is Gears of War an FPS? It’s a third person tactical. Not the same thing. I’d put that under the convoluted category of ‘RPG/Action/Adventure’.
I mean, I get that it’s all well and good, and theoretically makes strides toward the Greater Good of Gamer Equality (assuming there can ever be such a thing), but a little editing wouldn’t have hurt.
In the end, I remain of the mind that most guys believe that the majority of girls prefer to play Cooking Mama rather than Gears of War. Maybe this is true. Maybe it’s not. The truth remains that there are girls who would never touch Cooking Mama, but love Gears of War. There’s some who wouldn’t play either. There’s some that wouldn’t mind playing both. In the end, what does it matter? I think we all just want games we can enjoy.
The problem is mainly that game developers need to listen to what girls want, not just what they think girls want. There’s always a common ground to be found. You will always have more girls buying the Paris Hilton game than you will guys, and you’ll likely have more guys buying the latest FPS than girls. That doesn’t automatically mean that all girls want to play Paris Hilton (I certainly have no desire to) or that all guys want to play FPS games or that there aren’t games that appeal to both sexes equally.
Regardless, I think this whole equality thing has a long way to go. To be honest, I don’t see much equality between male gamers, so why should females be any different? I sit there in general chat in WoW and watch everyone insult each other. No one really knows if they’re talking to a guy or a girl. Everyone’s a n00b or a moron to someone else. So, in that way, I guess we have acheived some level of equality.
