Gizmondo at Long Last

Gizmondo

North American portable fans will (finally!) be able to ahold of Tiger Telematics’ addition to the handheld gaming market. Rumours had been flying that Tiger would delay the release of Gizmondo further in the US, despite the fact that it has been available in Europe for some time.

Tiger’s financial ineptness, which saw it $328 million in the hole and blaming Gizmondo development costs and non-cash expenses associated with shares of restricted common stock issued for services, has raised ire with shareholders, investors, and consumers. Poor money management is a problem at any level, but when you’re into it for hundreds of millions of dollars, with a good chunk going towards questionable bonuses and perks, you bet your bottom dollar (or your $-328,000,001th dollar) that folks are going to get a little cranky.

After facing lawsuits in Europe for being unable to produce the Gizmondo by scheduled deadlines, it’s not hard to figure out why Tiger would be so reluctant to delay release to the US. The hand held features a 400Mhz processor, “state of the art” Nvidia graphics chips, an 8-way directional pad, and built-in GPS technology. Some of the most exciting, innovative and interactive experiences the gaming industry has ever seen are currently in development.

My interest in this flaming ball of disaster is about nil, in spite of Tiger’s desperate assertions that it will revolutionise mobile gaming and make me a happier, more fulfilled individual. A company with such poor business sense and even poorer accountability skills (fess up when you mess up), doesn’t deserve a cent of my hard-earned cash. But for those of you who are not so easily discouraged, the Gizmondo will be available in the American market on October 22nd. Unless they delay it at the last minute, or the bigwigs spend all the shipping money on fancy cars and booze.
