Golden Joysticks Awarded

by Erin on November 6th, 2005

Golden Joystick Awards

I’m just barely refraining from making very lewd comments. Barely.

Want to see my Golden Joystick? Twenty-four carat entertainment right here for ‘ya babe…

I couldn’t help it, I’m sorry. My will is weak.

Two hundred thousand gamers can’t be wrong though, and that’s how many cast their vote to decide this year’s recipients. Being in its 22nd year and hosting a few hundred swanky guests at an equally swanky London hotel, the Golden Joysticks are a valuable marker for any title to add to its resume. The opportunity to for the gaming community to have their say is a welcome change from award shows and “Top Game” lists that rely solely on the often jaded, embittered opinions of those of us in the gaming press, or the biased pat on the back propaganda from the developers and publishers themselves.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas had the biggest yield, speeding off in a stolen Mercedes with five of the honours including PlayStation 2 Game of the Year, Hero of 2005 (CJ), Villain of 2005 (Officer Tenpenny), BBC Radio One – Colin and Edith’s Best Game Soundtrack of 2005, and Nuts Magazines’ Ultimate Game of 2005. Very impressive.

Nintendo had itself a pretty good take, earning Publisher of the Year honours (obviously tied to their strong collection of DS games), The Carphone Warehouse Handheld Game of the Year thanks to Super Mario 64 DS, and were pegged for Christmas greatness with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as The MCV One to Watch for Xmas.

By sheer numbers alone, World of Warcraft was the obvious choice for The Sun Online - Online Game of the Year. I’m sure though (no offence WoW players!) that there may have been a less commercially successful, but more innovatively deserving candidate. No doubt about it though, WoW has had a resounding impact on not only the online gaming scene, but gaming as a whole.

The rest of the awards were handed out as follows:

Console Specific
Xbox Game of the Year – Halo 2
PC Game of the Year – Half Life 2
GameCube Game of the Year – Resident Evil 4

Etc.
Editor’s Game of the Year – Resident Evil 4
Best Film-Based Game of 2005 – Resident Evil 4
The Sun’s One to Watch for 2006 – Resident Evil 5
The Girl’s Choice for 2005 – The Sims 2
The In Stock Magazine Retailer of the Year – Play.com
The Game One Gaming Innovation of the Year - PSP
Unsung Hero of the Year - Fahrenheit

I forsee a split within the female gaming community. Those of you who are “hardcore” and enjoy the FPS and the slaughter and whatnot, and those of you who are more into the Sims type games.

Like how all those guys who play the sports games, aren’t really gamers ;) OH I saw something on like Spike or whatever about the “Ultimate Gamer” and it was for Madden ‘06. I was so mad. They had some dumbass get a sweet “hookup” in that his apartment got turned into a football freak’s dream and they had him running around with some football players.

Somethingawful had a great Photoshop Phriday last week where they changed the names of games to be more realistic with their content. “Madden ‘06 Roster Update” had me laughing for hours.

well now, I see I’ve gone off once again. Sorry.
