Graphical Overhaul for World of Warcraft?

by Ingrid on May 24th, 2008

WorldofWarcaft_LogoIn an interview with EuroGamer, World of Warcraft producer, J. Allen Brack hinted at the possibility of a graphical upgrade to the popular MMO. Despite its insane popularity, WoW has often been criticized by gamers for being “too cartoony” and for lacking in the pretty graphics many games employ these days. With the upcoming expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, WoW will see a few minor graphical updates.

Though it is likely that Blizzard is considering major upgrades to the current client, it’s very likely that we won’t see a major overhaul for a while to come. J. Allen Brack pointed out that, “A lot of people continued to play with the original client, because it was faster, or they preferred it, or were just used to it or whatever and so for me as a game developer, the idea that we would spend so much time and energy on something and have people go, ‘meh, that’s not really for me,’ that’s not very exciting.”

It doesn’t sound to me that Blizzard’s got graphical overhaul as a major priority at the moment, but as technology continues to improve it’s likely that we will see something along those lines in the future.

Yeah I heard that this issue is something Blizzard looks into every time they make an expansion. But I really don’t see a radical change happening if ever they do make an improvement. A radical change will just cause another problem, that of increasing the system requirements too much that they alienate some their player base.
