Halo 360 Design Flops

Was anyone excited about the new Halo version of the Xbox 360? Considering that the new announcement, which Microsoft seemed to think was the cat’s meow, was greeted with chirping crickets and throat-clearing when it was unveiled to, let’s face it, some of the more rabid gaming fans in existence at E3, it looks like the green and orange cover just ain’t cutting it.

It’s hard to say exactly what caused the lacklustre response to what should have been a great product redesign for one of the most anticipated games in the history of the industry.

Could it be that consumers are just plain sick and tired of being bashed over the head with different colors (remember when the PS2 came out with sequential black, silver, pink, white? Did anyone buy them all, just to have the colors?) that came out every few months, advertised as must haves. Despite the fact, that is, that most people who wanted the system in its infancy had already purchased it. Is the 360 falling prey to that sort of consumer apathy? If I had shelled out cash for a 360, and more for a customized faceplate, I’d be looking at the Halo shell saying “neat, but I’m not buying another system just to get it”.

Or, has the controversy surrounding the company’s response to all of the failed systems finally caught up with them? Even folks who would buy a second 360 just for the Halo theme may be leery of investing more money in a console that has a 33% failure rate. Calls for more effective fixes and even product recalls have been heard from common consumer, to well-known journalist alike.

Regardless, Microsoft better do some reshuffling and image shining if it hopes to keep up with the PS3 and chase the Wii come this holiday season.
