IGE Faces Legal Challenge From WoW Gamer
In my youth and stupidity, I admit to working for an enterprise funded by a real money transfer outfit. Not surprisingly, the extremely promising project flopped, leaving me with a lingering bitterness towards the whole “secondary market” scene of MMORPG’s. In spite of that, I see the growth and eventual acceptance of these practice as inevitable, owing largely to the fact that no matter how strictly the game developers police it, or how explicit the EULA for a game, that people will always want that short-cut to newer, cooler things (and be willing to pay good, real world cash for them).
It’s a kind of resignation rather than an endorsement. The futility of the fight, which sees MMO’s slapping account bans and outlawing RMT trading, and companies like IGE using an extensive farming network to reduce chances of being caught, reminds of the good old Ouroboros, the dragon that is eternally eating his own tail. No one is really winning or losing, but just nibbling pathetically at each other’s heels, with gamers stuck somewhere in no man’s land.
One World of Warcraft player, however, has had enough with what he describes in a class action legal suit against IGE Entertainment as a:
calculated decision to reap substantial profits by knowingly interfering with and substantially impairing the intended use and enjoyment associated with consumer agreements between Blizzard Entertainment and subscribers to its virtual world called World of Warcraft.
By violating WoW’s Terms of Service, offering an advantage to players willing to pay for their advancement, and, in the opinion of some, devaluing in-game currency and materials by making them more readily available, WoW player Antonio Hernandez feels that third party sellers are essentially ruining the gaming experience for all players. The suit he filed seeks a legal injuction against the sale of gold and items online, unspecified damages, and the recovery of court costs related to the trial. The suit in all of its glory can be read here.
