Lawyer Sues Linden Over Account Suspension
I think this falls into the category of “big waste of taxpayers’ time, money, and judicial system”. Account bannings in online games often result in very peeved players who swear up and down that they haven’t violated any Terms of Service and begin spamming the game developer’s email with alternating messages of whiny excuse-making, outright rage and shameless pleading. One Second Life resident has taken things one step further by bringing a game-related slight into a real Pennsylvania courtroom.
Marc Bragg found himself at the business end of Linden Life’s ban hammer last year when the company caught him exploiting a URL quirk to “grab several plots of virtual land for cheap”. The Second Life developer quickly slapped an account suspension on Bragg, claiming that his actions violated the game’s ToS.
Bragg, himself an attorney, decided to do what lawyers do best, and filed suit against Linden Labs, claiming that his is the rightful owner of the nabbed land and that Second Life’s auction system didn’t even squeak violation when the sale was originally completed. In addition to acknowledged ownership the claimant has also demanded the return of his virtual cash, known as Lindens, from his account worth $3,200 USD.
No court date is currently set.
