Live! Arcade! Rocks!

Indeed to play such wonderous games as Joust and Gauntlet once more on a brand new shiny console is enough to make anyone’s toes tingle, so perhaps this isn’t such a ground breaking assertion. But what I’m hearing from every corner of the gaming world is that the XBox Live! component of the 360 outshines every other aspect and pummels the pathetic games that are available into a pulp.
It turns out, that contrary to my own beliefs about the attitudes of gamers, graphics and power are not everything. We still appreciate a well constructed game no matter how old or out-dated. I find it sad that for many, there is little in the next-gen that tempts us to leave this-gen, or even the before-this-gen. If I spend hundreds of dollars to wind up using most of my time to play Space Invaders, you know that there’s something terribly wrong with the new offerings. Not that Space Invaders isn’t a terrific game, but come on, I’m supposed to be blown away by what this amazing new machine has to offer…
I’m not the only one that isn’t.

Live Arcade + Xbox Live means you can play all the oldies and goodies with your friends anywhere in the world.
Sure, it’s odd that that’s the best “feature” of the console… But at the same time, isn’t it odd that it’s taken this long for someone to figure out that that’s what gamers really want? Great gameplay, online, with their friends?

Well that’s what PC folks have had for years. The console guys are just finding this stuff out now.

Naw, you couldn’t play TMNT or Smash TV or any of the classics with friends online, because folk were just using emulators.

On one hand, I think the xbox Live service is great. The idea of being able to go online and buy games, or to be able to play with your friends is appealing. Well intellectually, at least.
I tend to agree with Matt, though, in that, I’m quite happy to play online with my friends, on the PC. I want my game console to provide great gameplay, with my friends - in my living room. But is it just me or is it harder and harder to find interesting games that are not single player?
