Maxis Out, Tilted Mill In For SimCity Societies
Many Sims fans are shaking their fists at the evil overlords at Electronic Arts, torn, it seems, between being happy that after a four year drought, a new Sims game will be hitting the shelves, but irked that the original creators of the series, Maxis, won’t be the developer.
Maxis is apparently too busy working on the frantically anticipated Spore, and spitting out expansion after expansion for existing Sims games. That being the case, EA has pegged Tilted Mill Entertainment, creators of the Ancient Egyptian sim Children of the Nile, as the brains behind SimCity Societies. Tilted Mill, naturally, is practically imploding with happiness at being given the helm of such a high-profile game, and Director of Development Chris Beatrice promised that the new game would take the series “in a new and exciting direction” but also aimed to “take the franchise back to its roots”.
To me, this is a bit of a head-scratcher. Is it even possible to have a Sims game that isn’t developed by Will Wright’s crew at Maxis? Is it even fair to call such a game a true Sims brand game, or is it, by lack of authoritative association, a mere imposter?
