MGS 4 Needs 1 Million Sold On Day One
Just how expensive is game development these days? I’m not talking Cooking Mama; I mean AAA, prime-cut, look-how-pretty-I-am games. Like Metal Gear Solid 4 for example, the highly anticipated title from Hideo Kojima. People have been salivating over this game for years now, grasping at every offered screenshot, drooling over every new video…let’s hope the hype holds up, and is as large, as it seems to be on the surface.
For Kojima’s company to recoup the cost of development alone, the assistant producer Ryan Payton estimates that the game has to sell at least 1 million copies…on the first day of sales. Although the game is currently slated to be PS3 exclusive, it’s thought that a 360 version may eventually crop up, just to help boost revenue and appeal to a wider audience. Payton expressed uncertainty about the ability for the game to reach its sales targets on the PS3 alone, citing the relatively low number of PS3’s that have been purchased in the US (2 million) and Japan (1.3 million).
MGS 4 is currently due to hit the shelves sometime in Q2 2008. Can it be as successful as its creator’s other efforts? Can it even recoup costs?
