Microsoft Sneaks An Anti-Hacking Fix to the Xbox 360

by Ingrid on March 6th, 2007

Back in November, a group of hackers revealed that they could tamper with the Xbox 360 OS and install Linux and other non-Microsoft-approved software due to an opening in the console’s code. Microsoft swiftly set to work on a remedy, and released the “fix” through an “OS Update” back in January that concealed its true intentions.

The patch’s main objective was to seal up the hole in the code that would allow owners to modify or otherwise “tamper” with the console’s operating system. In addition, games released after February 20th will come with the update.

So if you were hoping to break into the Xbox 360 and install Linux, you’ll have to find a way to circumvent the latest update. Ah well. I’m sure hackers love a challenge.
