Modified Xbox 360s Now Banned From Xbox Live

by Ingrid on May 21st, 2007

It’s a bad time to be the owner of a modded Xbox 360. In an effort to stop cross-regional downloading, Microsoft has banned all modified Xbox 360s from the Xbox Live service. They’ve opted to target the machine itself rather than the account, so if you have an Xbox 360 with a mod chip, you’ll receive an error message when you attempt to log into Xbox Live.

The error will look something like this:

Status Code: Z: 8015 - 190D

Microsoft had this to say on the topic:

“These users will not have their account automatically banned from Live, but they will no longer be able to access the service from the console they modified”, reported Microsoft.

“We have stated in the past that customers can only enjoy access to the Xbox Live community through the use of a genuine, unmodified, Xbox console and we will continue to enforce this rule to ensure the integrity of our service, the protection of our partners and the benefits of our users.”

I wish Microsoft would spend the same amount of time trying to develop a region free console instead of trying to put out fires wherever they arise.
