Motor Trend Gives Nod To Turismo Creator

by Erin on January 10th, 2007

I’m more of a video game nerd than I am a car fiend, but perhaps that’s also why I think the inclusion of Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi on Motor Trend Magazine’s Top 50 Power List for the past year. This is the third time that the influential designer has been thus honoured, and again in 2006, he remains the only gaming industry member to squeeze into the very real world of fast cars and cool rides.

Coming in at number twenty-nine this year(down from last year’s 17 and contrary to <a href=”IGN.comIGN.com http://ps3.ign.com/articles/753/753320p1.html”>IGN’s</a> reporting of 27 (tsk)), Yamauchi topped the likes Jay Leno, car nut (#48),

It fascinates me that a person creating virtual objects is recognized in the same breath as those creating solid, real-world items. To me the distinction is non-existent; both Yamauchi and any Ferrari lead have teams beneath them managing the tiny details, both are building cars, both have to pay attention to the mechanics and physics of their vehicle, and both turn over their prodigies to the scrutiny and approval of distinguished consumers. It’s interesting to see that more mainstream media, and the non-gaming world as a whole, is beginning to look at games as art, games as a tangible creation, and game design as a skill.

What they don’t quite get, according to the byline which states “grooming the next generation of auto enthusiasts”, is gamer demographics. We’re not talking 12-18 year olds here, we’re talking twenties, thirties, and a growing number of gaming grannies. Perhaps they mean the next generation as in those closest to being able to afford a Ferrari.
