Nintendo Announces DVD-Enabled Wii

I guess Nintendo has decided to shoot itself in the foot, or maybe they were worried that the Wii would sell too much and wanted to make sure that didn’t happen.
Either way, they’ve just announced that the DVD-enabled version of the Wii will be released in 2007.
Speaking to GameDaily Biz, Nintendo US spokesman Matt Atwood said no firm date or price for version 2.0 of the Wii has been decided but that there will be an “extra cost required to implement DVD playback”. He also said that those who buy the first edition of the Wii would not be able to bolster the console’s functionality at a later date as it “requires more than a firmware upgrade”.
In other words, if you want a Wii with DVD playback, don’t buy it now.
I have to wonder though, how many people actually care about a DVD-enabled Wii. I assume most people don’t buy consoles to play DVDs on them. So … is this important to you? Would it prolong your desire to purchase a Wii during the Holidays?

My PS2 already plays DVDs so I don’t really care whether Wii can or not. What I would /really/ like is a region free DVD player built into one of these consoles so that I can watch both Australian and overseas DVDs on them.
