Nintendo DS & Gamer Girls

by Ingrid on August 27th, 2006

I arrived in Paris early Thursday morning, and sat in the hotel lobby waiting on a room. After a while, I began to notice a fascinating trend: girls playing on Nintendo DS consoles. I saw about five different girls, young girls, holding their pink or white consoles and playing away.

Meanwhile, I saw no boys playing. None! Well, I did see boys playing, but mainly they were punching each other and chasing each other around.

It made me wonder: Has Nintendo succeeded where everyone else has failed in attracting females to the gaming world?

I couldn’t tell what the girls were playing. Nintendogs, maybe. Perhaps Brain Age. Maybe something else entirely. Mainly, I was pleased to see them playing at all.

It gives me hope that gaming for future generations will inch toward equality, rather than its current one-sidedness. Whatever Nintendo is doing, or has done, I hope it continues.

must be a EU thing. All the girls here seem to be more interested in appearing thin and beautiful than actually doing anything realistic in life. Of course, I’m speaking in broad terms (no pun intended) and by no means saying ALL are this way, but enough to warrant the comment.

All the latest DS commercials have featured extremely attractive early 20’s models playing the DS in a variety of every day life scenes. They aren’t pushign the OOH PINK GRRRRL POWAH crap the dumbshit marketers of the past used to pawn Barbie off onto the fragile minds of developing young women and thier parents; this is a good thing.

My little sister wants a Nintendo DS desperately, if that means anything…
