PC World Canada: 10 Worst Consumer Tech Trends

I missed this last month, but there’s another Canadian game writer named Erin, and she’s mighty peeved by a number of consumer technology trends plaguing not just gaming, but digital entertainment in general. She lays out her “10 Worst Consumer Tech Trends” in PC World Canada, a list comprising of an interesting cross-section of consumer annoyances including:

#8 Fanboys/Fangirls

“The definition of fanboy (or fangirl) is an individual who harbours a fanatic devotion to something without logical reason. In the case of consumer technology, it can be applied to a situation where a person’s self-esteem and sense of self-worth is attached the success of a particular product or brand… Read an article about a Windows product and you can count on a few Mac users showing up and leaving snarky comments about how much they love OS X. Why do people feel such fierce loyalty to a corporation? You can rest assured the corporation doesn’t feel the same level of loyalty towards you.”

Haha! Harsh, very harsh. Emphasis in the quote is entirely mine. It’s annoying to be sure, and it can make asking innocent questions in forums very uncomfortable and intimidating. From that standpoint, and from the perspective that it partitions the consumer body into fan camps, I suppose it’s not the greatest, but I’m not sure this ranks up there as one of the worst trends.

#7 Regional Encoding

“It seems strange that companies would rather deny consumers the right to experience games or movies altogether simply because they haven’t been officially released in that consumer’s country. In the digital age of online shopping, it’s so easy to order something from another country and have it shipped, which seems to be a solid argument as any for the abolishment of region encoding.”

The number one issue?

Digital Rights Management (DRM). She feels it’s pushing otherwise lawful people to resort to piracy for the simple reason that their hard-earned money and purchasing power are being limited by the anti-piracy measures inflicted upon them by the powers that be.
