Play Girlz Wishlist: The Wii

by Ingrid on December 12th, 2006

The Wii launched in France last Friday and sometime Friday morning, while I checked my WoW auctions I suddenly thought, “Hey, I think I want a Wii.”

Set out to find a Wii. I was hoping the fact that the Wii release coincided with the Fête des Lumières event in Lyon would mean that fewer people would remember the Wii release.

Got to the store.

No Wii. That store received only two Wiis in fact. Or maybe it was three. I forget. Either way, not enough. I had expected to find a big mess of people searching for the Wii but other than one guy asking about it, nada.

Hit another game store. Wii shelf: empty.

Another store: Not even a Wii shelf.

Gave up.

There were Wii displays at all locations but no one was demo-ing the Wii. So I didn’t even get to briefly and publically molest it. It was all very sad and anti-climactic.

Since then, I’ve grown progressively more convinced that I want a Wii. I had to settle for getting a memory card for my PS2 instead, which was necessary, but not quite the same thing.

So there it is, another item on my wishlist: Le Wii.

My friend got a Wii and it is really fun. Unfortunately, the games themselves - except for one or two of them - are really for the 8-14 age group. There is nothing wrong with that, and those games are fun, but it is overwhelmingly so.

Also, not sure if you care, but this release of the Wii will not play DVDs. Some people were disappointed by this. Apparently, the next release of the Wii sometime next year (version release, that is) will be DVD compatible. It’s not simply a firmware thing either. It just lacks the component.

It is still a fun system. I really cannot wait until more games come out for it. I wish Okami had come out for the Wii.

I wish Okami came out for the Wii too…

And I think as far as the games go, it’s all based on how you choose to look at them. Looking at something like the original GameBoy, or even the PS2 compared to the 360 and the PS3 gives the impression that the other systems are somewhat infantile for us adult gamers. This impression is biased mind you, by the reliance upon technological detail as an indicator of quality.
