Power Glove Take 2?

Jason Skowronski, a University of Illinois graduate student in electrical and computer engineering, has developed a prototype of a glove that might revolutionize the future of gaming.
He even goes as far as saying that his glove controller could be even better than the Wii’s, the DDR dance pad, or any other alternative-type controller on the market today.
“It enables lots of interesting scenarios,” he said.
Some scenarios he’s tossed into the mix include the interpretation of sign language, where the glove could translate the hand movements into text. Another, digital art projects, such as molding virtual clay.
Noble concepts, but hardly best sellers on the amazon.com list.
His goal with this prototype is to bring the price down to around $99 (USD), patent the technology, and approach game companies and investors.
Well, hopefully, if this glove ever makes it into the market it won’t suffer the same fate as the Nintendo Power Glove. Of course, the gaming industry of today is a lot different than it was in 1989 when the Power Glove launched, and the early 90s when its parent company went out of business due to poor sales.
The key to the success of such a controller is in the games released for it. I enjoyed the Power Glove (Mike Tyson’s Punch Out, anyone?) but did you ever try to play Bad Street Brawler? It’s no wonder the Power Glove tanked.
But maybe Nintendo was simply ahead of its time. No other system has ever tried to revive the Power Glove concept. Is that because it’s destined to fail, or simply because no one has ever come up with an innovative way of making it work?
Do you think Skowronski’s prototype might have a future in the gaming industry?
