PS2 Still Going Strong in 2006

by Erin on January 15th, 2007

Also from the NPD Group was a tally of the top performing console games and accessories of 2006 by sales totals. Five of the top ten games were for…the PS2, a system that seems to be towing the line between defunctness and affordable alternative; three belonged to the Xbox 360; and two, Brain Age and New Super Mario Bros. scooted in on the Nintendo DS platform.

Madden NFL 07 performed well on a couple of different systems, taking the top spot on the chart for the PS2 version and eighth for the Xbox 360 game. The chart looks a little something like this:

2006 Overall Totals

  1. Madden NFL 07, EA ($2.8 million) — PS2
  2. New Super Mario Bros., Nintendo–($2.0 million) — NDS
  3. Gears of War, Microsoft–($1.8 million) — Xbox 360
  4. Kingdom Hearts II, Square Enix–($1.7 million) — PS2
  5. Guitar Hero II, Activision–($1.3 million) — PS2
  6. Final Fantasy XII, Square Enix–($1.3 million) –PS2
  7. Brain Age ($1.1 million) –NDS
  8. 360–Madden NFL 07, EA ($1.1 million) — Xbox 360
  9. 360–Tom Clancy’s GRAW, Ubisoft ($1.0 million) — Xbox 360
  10. PS2–NCAA Football 07, EA ($1.0 million) — PS2

The numbers for December of 2006 are worth looking at separately, seeing that they reflect the November launches of two new systems and the frenzy of holiday shopping that ensued.

December 2006 Totals - Over All Platforms

  1. Madden NFL 07, EA ($1.9 million)
  2. Call of Duty 3, Activision ($1.1 million)
  3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Nintendo ($1.1million)
  4. Cars, THQ ($874,000)
  5. Need for Speed Carbon, EA ($871,600)
  6. Gears of War, Microsoft ($815,700)
  7. Guitar Hero 2, Activision ($805,200)
  8. Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, LucasArts ($792,300)
  9. WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2007, THQ ($731,600)
  10. Tony Hawk’s Project 8, Activision ($713,900)
  11. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Activision ($642,900)

This, coupled with the record-breaking sales numbers from the UK last year, has things looking up for the industry. The year 2007 is not without challenges however; what with the revamped Electronic Entertainment Expo now designated ‘E for All‘, and the lack of a console launch to continue floating the numbers, the totals at the end of this year might turn out less-than-heartening.
