PS3 Controller and Price Point

by Erin on May 9th, 2006

Playstation logoWord on the street, (or actually via email from Robyn over at GamesIndustryWire.com) is that the PS3 controller will be less like the space aged crescent roll that Sony was waving in everyone’s faces last year, and more like the ‘ugly’ Dualshock controllers that have accompanied every previous PlayStation. With several small exceptions. It may look like the old Dualshock, but it certainly won’t act like the old Dualshock, as it, like the Wii (oh how it pains me to type that!!) controller, has the ability to translate player motion into on-screen movement in ’six degrees of freedom’.
As Joystiq & Engadget explains this, and a couple other tidbits:

The controller’s got X-Y-Z, pitch, roll, yaw, lateral motion detection. The controller uses bluetooth and wireless controls. It’s lighter than the PS2 controller. This is interesting, because it suddenly makes Microsoft look like the odd man out on the motion-sensing controller front.

Very interesting indeed. What do you have to say to that big M? I’m a little disappointed that Sony shied away from design creativity with the controller, especially seeing that those who had managed to give it a hold said that it was comfortable and ergonomic. I guess Sony can only handle so much innovation in one stretch (unlike Nintendo which just wipes the slate), and chickened out when it came down to brass tacks. I’m all about the brass tacks baby, so tsk tsk, shame shame on Sony. I’m very excited though, about the motion sensing. It was what got me all in a tizzy about the Revo, and now to find out they’re going to offer it on my platform of choice…fantastic!

PS3 price points were also discussed, and Phil Harrison finally threw out some actual figures. While the damage to the pocketbook isn’t as severe as some doomsdayers were fearing, it’s not exactly chump change either. Looks like:

  • North America
  • 20GB for $499 US ($549 CDN)
  • 60GB for $599 US ($659 CDN)
  • Europe
    • 20GB for 499 Euros
    • 60GB for 599 Euros
  • Japan
    • 20GB for 59,800 Yen
    • 60GB TBA

And the 60GB in Australia is going to be $1000! How steep is that!

Yes, i was actually talking to the XBOX rep yesterday, and he was saying all of XBOX are jumping around in happiness at the news… Over here the Xbox360 goes for RRP $650 and people go in thinking “Well i’ll spend around $1000 and get a controller and a few games too” where as starting at $1000 will knock people back a little… *shrugs* I say, I dont have $1000 to spend eitherway…im still waiting to win one! lol
