PS3 Is Not a Used Game Nazi

Phew!
For a while there it was sounding like Sony had really outdone itself and made it impossible to play used games on the PS3 thanks to disc encoding that would render a particular disc playable only on a particular PS3. Additions like that are like writing your own death certificate, and I couldn’t believe that Sony would be quite that dimwitted in the face of the other two next-gen systems, to basically cut out second hand sales altogether. If that had been the case, I would have had no option but to skip buying the PS3, as one of my favourite things to do is run down to my neighbourhood Cheapies and try out ancient, corny, games for fun.
ThankfullyAleks Krotoski at The Guardian’s gamesblog, contacted SCEE (Sony’s European branch) to get the details straighted out. Jennie Kong, the UK PR Manager at SCEE, had the following to say:
I would like to clarify that this is false speculation and that PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console.
Hoorah! Sony isn’t as dense as I thought they were, and all of us second-hand gamers can breathe a little easier.

Thank GOD! I was going to post about the whole PS3 thing before but it just didn’t seem plausible that sony could be THAT stupid, so I figured I’d wait until there was more info. I’m happy that you found some. :D

Do you think they might have learned something from their music DRM debacle?
I can only hope so.
