PS3 Price Cut On the Way

by Ingrid on March 20th, 2007

Analyst Yuji Fujimori stated at CNN Money that a possible price cut for the PlayStation 3 might be possible due to cost-reduction measures being taken in the production process. Sony saving money means that a $100 price cut to the PS3 might happen as early as October.

Fujimori’s note outlined how Sony reduced the number of components in the original PlayStation from 700 pieces to 200 in its final form, and the PS2’s makeup was reduced from 2,000 to 600 components. According to the report, the PS3 prototype consisted of 4,000 components, and today production is heading for the 2,000 mark.

Additionally, IBM has reported that the PS3’s Cell processor - a huge factor in the high price of the Sony console - will be lowered from 90nm to 65nm.

It’s good to see that Sony is finally understanding what everyone has been saying all along: most consumers will not pay that much money for a video games console, no matter how great its specs. Hopefully, a price cut by October will put the gaming console up to par with sale for the Xbox 360 and Wii come the Holiday season.
