PS3 Price Cut Temporary

by Erin on July 16th, 2007

Just when it looked like mere mortals would finally be able to afford the pricey technology behind the PS3 comes bad news from Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai. This poverty relief ain’t permanent. In fact, it’s a way for Sony to clean out old stocks to make way for a newer, pricier version of the console.

The $100 price cut, announced last week to much cheering from penny-pinching gamers, applies only to the 60GB machine, which Hirai later confirmed would be discontinued in favour of a larger 80GB system retailing for the same price as the 60GB before the price cut.

SCEA honcho David Karraker played innocent, declaring that:

“This is absolutely not a bait and switch. We are offering a full-featured PS3 for $100 lower than the original price and will do so for months to come, allowing consumers the opportunity to acquire this model at this adjusted price.”

Even at the reduced price, the PS3 is still a hard pill to swallow at $499 USD. Particularly when its competition is retailing for under $300 (Wii) and the 120GB Xbox 360 is under $500. Ouch. If it weren’t for the current rate of system failures, those 360’s would be flying off the shelf methinks. Microsoft is missing out on a brilliant opportunity.

1 opinion for PS3 Price Cut Temporary

Bait and switch. They deny this, but that’s what it is. What surprises me about all this is that Sony is still capable of making things worse than it already is for them.

Who’s keeping track of how many times Sony has shot itself in the foot? There’s already a flood of empty slugs.

Do they actually think that people buy the PS3 for its Blu ray disk? Is a difference of 20GB worth the additional $100 for this new PS3 model?

    No.

Then what the hell is this stunt for? I have no idea. It does drive me nuts that they keep attempting to piss everyone off.

    Argh!
